This painting was done from some reference photos taken toward the end of 2023, when I was taking some back roads from Thurgoona to Henty, New South Wales.
The interesting thing about this old home is the wall construction. Visible to the right of the chimneys are the tops of Cypress Pine tree trunks, erected vertically and the space between them was filled with a mixture mud and small branches.
This process is called wattle and duab, where a woven lattice of wooden strips or branches/twigs called "wattle" is "daubed" with a sticky material usually made of some combination of wet soil, clay, sand, animal dung and/or straw.
I wasn't able to get close to this homestead as I would be trespassing. There is so much more to explore around this old home. I hope to find out who the owner is so I can ask permission to take more reference photos and do a heap of onsite sketches for future paintings before the place falls down completely.
This Painting comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, completed and signed by me, Graham Wade, (the Artist).
